Teen girls are known to fantasize about what they want to be when they grow-up. In fact, I often receive inquiries from Contemporary Teen readers seeking advice on this very topic. So when representatives for Eva, a 21 year old rising pop star, best known for her Billboard track, Not My Daddy, written by Ke$ha, contacted me to do this cover story and video interview about her rise to stardom, I couldn’t pass up the opportunity. Why?
Because many of you are exactly like Eva and I both were at your age. Yes, guilty as charged – I was bitten by the singing and acting bug too. And if you are in fact like us, we know that your artistic energy is burning, trying to find a means of escape. You are probably seeking the big time. That is, fame, fortune, glitz and glamor. And interestingly enough, while Eva and I dreamed the same dream, sought the same path, the outcomes as you can see are drastically different. I am sitting here writing this article, and Eva, well, she is on her way to international super stardom. Already, she has landed gigs as the opening act for hip-hop icon Nas and Grammy-winner Alicia Keys. She also caught the eye of Snoop Dogg teaming-up with the superstar in the infectious track Popular. Many others also foresee Eva’s awesome star potential and have lent a hand along the way, including Lupe Fiasco and Scott Storch. And her newest single, Ashes, which recently debuted on Billboard, is expected to hit even higher on the charts than Not My Daddy.
Making it There …
So if you are one of those teens, yearning to become a star, you are probably much like Eva and me. Slipping and sliding through the grueling, yet, exciting process of achieving your ultimate dream. Whether it’s performing on the big screen or in concert someday, you are compelled to get there. You idolize, study and envy, to some extent, every pop star on the radio. And if you’re fortunate enough, as Eva and I both are, you have supportive parents. By age nine I was writing lyrics to my own songs, performing in plays, and memorizing every beat to Bryan Adams hits, all the while, worshiping New Kids on the Block. And Eva too, as a little girl, would jam to Britney Spears, sing Christina Aguilera in her bedroom mirror and rock-out to nineties boy bands. She always had an irresistible passion for dance music. We both pursued fame, too
k similar steps to get there, yet, it is just a select talented few, who actually make it there.
So why is Eva being chosen, when I wasn’t? Talent plays a huge role, but so does our good old friend – fate. It just wasn’t my destiny, or calling. I was meant to do other things, equally fulfilling now, but disappointing at the time of realization as a teen girl. However, if you are seeking stardom, your outcome has yet to be determined. And Eva with her long blond hair, and bubbly personality, proves that this dream can still come true. Born in Lincoln, Nebraska, and raised in the California Bay Area, she is on the verge of realizing the sweet success of countless hours of hard work, dedication, and steadfast commitment.
It’s Not Always Easy …
Yet, Eva is also a realist by nature. She will be the first to admit that while she has enjoyed the road to stardom and couldn’t see herself doing anything else, or seeking any other path, it has not been an easy feat. Days jam packed with early morning workout sessions to combat the pressure she endures to conform to the ideal body type, to long photo shoots, and endless hours of rehearsals to perfect her stage act – it can be exhausting. And although Eva croons about the latest fashion trends, love and popularity, ironically, she claims to never have been one of the cool kids. “When I was in high school, I was never popular. I rocked to the beat of my own drum,” says Eva. And regardless if people understood her beat, Eva always stayed true to herself. Today she is thriving, putting her soul out there, creating music for the masses to enjoy and it is just a matter of time before Eva becomes a household name.
